(our songs of the week will now actually be “songs of the week” so check back weekly for this feature, yup. check back daily for tons of other cool shit.)
This week’s song of the week is from OIO. Its definitely something different. It took me a minute to get into it so listen through the song.
The band on the song “Heroes”: “This was a song that basically “wrote itself” for different reasons, the majority of them stemming from the inner fight that kicks in when we find ourselves temporarily down, the thoughts you have just before the rage kicks in hard enough to propel you to get back up and decimate everything in your way on your path to victory. It’s both an homage and warning from the sense of a “deux ex machina” from greek tragedies as well as an “ode” to the hero. ”
Lyrics: Verse 1:
If i was a nightingale
wouldn’t none of you fail
to see that
daylight can bring nightmares
When you sing a different tale
Baby can you tell
me what you’ll call these daylight hour scares
I’ll make you life a jail
this aint no tale
your the only one in my hotel
I wanna hear you yell
maybe nightingale
is what you’ll call your hour scares
Chorus:
This is for heroes
Early before the dawn your victory bellows
A nocturnal song mmm hmm this is your ode
Anyone can sing along but when noise overflows
Only you crescendo ..oh-oh
The tower of lies you built
has finally fell
By might of my wingspan in mid air
Your tower of babble
All the lies you tell
Flush down the toilet
to your meant well
Don’t underestimate make no mistake
All the venom I bring with no snake
Cool second to break is all it takes
To make my knee-jerk react, give way
Chorus:
This is for heroes
Early before the dawn your victory bellows
A nocturnal song mmm hmm this is your ode
Anyone can sing along but when noise overflows
Only you crescendo oh-oh-oh-oh
Early before the dawn your victory bellows
A nocturnal song mmmhmm this is your ode
Anyone can sing along but when noise overflows
Only you crescendo
Bridge/Ad Lib
This is for heroes
Early before the dawn your victory bellows
A nocturnal song mmmhmm this is your ode
Anyone can sing along but when noise overflows
Only you crescendo oh-oh
repeat 3x
Band Bio: OIO is an Atlanta based two-piece band blending lush pop/electronic/rock rhythms unabashedly with dance/hip-hop influences, fronted by singer/songwriter Cecili Simmons. Instantly labeled “refreshing” by music industry insiders, the duo combines provocative, unconventional vocals with multi-genre influences into a distilled progressive, alternative electro-pop sound, crafted by producer/musician, Ray Stamps.
The pair met in an electronic musician’s online forum, and immediately decided to test their musical compatibility by joining efforts on a preliminary demo track. That demo would turn out to be their first song, “People,” and a mutual acknowledgement that their efforts were a definitive success. They met in person at Stamps’ studio later that same week eager to produce more of the magic they had discovered resulting from their newfound musical chemistry.
Prior to OIO, Stamps experienced commercial success and airplay with a previous bands Rocket Surgery and Tea Leaves, while Simmons experimented on projects with various electronic producers, as well as wrote and performed her with her own bands she organized throughout NYC and Atlanta.
