From vocalist Brian Fisher – ‘Drastic Measures was one of those songs that just started writing itself, in a way. Jason had been working on some programming and presented the sequence. We listened. It was distorted, quirky and obviously strange, but something about the pattern, aggressiveness and tension caught all of our interests while at the same time, caused confusion. With that being said, that was the approach/direction we pursued. So, we listened again.
We started messing with the organic instruments, guitar, bass and drums. It was kind of like, organic rhythmic patterns vs. the electronic stuttering. Then Chris stumbled into this (for lack of a better word) “funkadelic-ish” styled bass line and I can’t remember if it was Jon or Josh that hit the guitar line first, but something about the dissonance and choppiness created this persistent attitude, that somehow felt cohesive yet drastic and opposing.
“Are you ready for drastic change? Come on!”
Initially, the line was just a reflection of the jarring/drastic changes of the song structure. With those words on the burner and feeling burnt-out by all the annoying, argumentative, garbage that was being broadcast on the TV and the news at the time, I thought, how sarcastic and fun would it be to make it a song about protests? Not from ONE angle, but from ALL angles. All perspectives. A protest song about “You”. “Your” protest. A song for those feeling blah. Those that want something new to do. Something different. Something that relieves you from having to deal with those aggressively-passive finger-pointers that just spilt your morning coffee and still wonder why your having a bad day. We’ve all had them…well, some may not enjoy a great cup of coffee in the morning or what have you…But, I just wanted Drastic Measures to create a feeling that we are all unified, despite our states of annoying indifference’s. That was sort of the goal…So, let’s hit the streets!’
