I recently caught O.C.O. at the Highlander. It was my first time seeing them and they are one of the best local metal acts I’ve seen. The show was intense from start to finish and every song was a crowd pleaser. The O.C.O. is a rapid and vigorous grasp on everything “metal as fuck.” They are what makes me go to metal shows. They were interactive and fun in that thrash your face off sort of way and they never let up. O.C.O. is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with Mike “the Madman” Wilby on lead vocals and guitar, Erick “Blue” Hunnicut on Bass and James “Bo” Keller (of BoStylez Entertainment) on drums. Mike Wilby was amazing on vocals and always keeps it interesting with vocal change-ups, awesomely appropriate facial expressions (you’ll see what I mean when you see him live – see pic below) and powerful guitar riffs carrying you through each song from one side to the other. I like that O.C.O. does well with the dark, eerie element in hardcore metal. (See Hatebomb on the band’s myspace page). The feeling of their songs are commanding and epic and the atmosphere fun. Erick and Bo where an equally amazing construction never missing a step in the O.C.O.’s powerfully compelling land of metal greatness.
O.C.O. – blowing mother fuckers out of their
socks…demonstrating what a real metal band sounds like. I’d keep a look out for the O.C.O. I recommend taking a listen to “No Such Luck” on the bands myspace page. The video below is a cover they did of Lamb of God’s “Laid to Rest.” I asked a person in the crowd what they thought of the cover and the dude said “they did it better than Lamb of God.” We’ll let you decide for yourself…but its definitely on par at the least…
O.C.O. keeps great company; they opened up for The Bone Church. This was my second time seeing The Bone Church and even with a guest bassist (they currently looking to fill the spot after recently losing a member), they don’t disappoint. I was only able to stay for half of their set and in that half they brought out a member of local metal greats Project Mayhem. What ensued was a phenomenon; an onslaught of thrashy-hardcore metal talent of vast proportions. It was truly an awesome experience for everyone there and I’m glad we caught it on video….check it out…
The Bone Church is an extremely talented metal group in Atlanta really starting to gain traction. They play superbly fast progressive metal and E on vocals really adds a unique and gratifying element to The Bone Church’s metal sound with her vocal style and pitch; sometimes mixing in a mysterious and chilling effect to The Bone Church’s layered and accelerating radical sound.
In between these two metal giants was Dreaming of High-fives. They were a little different and a little lighter. They had components of hardcore and new wave but always had a more punk foundation. I really liked the sound and the set made me want to seek out more. Videos are below…
