On June 11th-15th the IMR Music festival once again descended upon Atlanta, bringing with it the absolute best in local and regional indie music. In the past this festival has been life changing for me, and this year was no exception. With five days of live music spanning four different venues, it was definitely one for the books. Curator Nate Keiser knows good tunes and loves sharing them with us all. He hand picked all the talent once again this year and I was truly impressed. Every act was a new soundscape, adventurous and unique. I cant wait for next year.
Spines at The Music Room
A scarring scythe of female vocal assault ripped through the air alongside heart pounding drums creating a mixture of emotions. Hard funk rock steering into almost bluesy arrangements of guitars that tickled your torso. Chunky melodic beats with torrents of eclectic poise rippled the room. This was an amazing performance all around.
Hot Wives at The Music Room
It was great to see these guys in action once again. Melodic post punk searing your senses and plowing down barriers with a huge sonic assault. I was proud to see them grow so much in the past year. I was blown away by the powerful riffs and pounding bass that resonated around the Music Room. Stirring guitars added to the corrosive chior of grinding tunes. Spitting out some real solid rock and bending the realms of chord progression to the max.
Bear Girl at The Basement
This new school emotionaly charged proto punk was so intense to witness. The lyrics dove and rose along with the stunning arrangements. The progressive set delved into much more than I had expected. Multiple genres intertwined into a twisted fairytale of musical mayhem. I highly recommend checking them out if you get the chance. Truly a treat to behold live and in the studio. Even with a few technical difficulties they got us all dancing and the room steamy.
Pillage & Plunder at The Basement
A truly quirky pop rock implosion for your ears, these boys continue to surpass all my assumptions about them. Not much to say except they have come a long way in a short time. High energy and stylish rhythms drive this trio really far. I have seen them a few times live and they always get me hype with their on stage energy. Get the new album ‘The show must go wrong’ when it comes out!
Eqo at The Basement
We were all treated to a rare acoustic set that showed that this hearty and melodic group can rock unhindered by amps. A twisted enigma of poetry and prose begging you to come closer. Soothing and swaying tunes that can snap your neck if you’re not careful. Lyrically triumphant and musically full of life, I would be remiss if I didn’t insist that you see them live. I love this band, and you should too. Check out their new single ‘Lighthouse’!
Cusses at The Basement
Nobody can compare to this power punk prog rock threesome who bring a hurricane with them wherever they go. Every time I am blessed by witnessing one of their fierce live shows I am blown away and left speechless by the end. They consistently deliver a narcotic energy and a supreme inhuman power throughout the set. Needless to say, the crowd was swept away by the incredible display of Savannas rock gods.
