Charges sounds like I want my ATL punk to sound. No new wave grooves mixed in to dilute its effectiveness. No swampy lyrics to weaken its momentum. Joel and Mick used to tour the U.K. and Ireland in a hard core punk band called Black Cougar Shock Unit; its definitely easy to pick up on the Irish, English punk influence…the kind I like. Formed upon a common admiration for farfisa organ punk, Charges carries on with true punk roots, igniting venue floors with sparks of organ blurred punk bliss. Fast paced, riff heavy guitars, exploding drums and vocals bellowed out in half melodies…uuuh…fuck yes.
Charges is Mick Winters (vocals, Farfisa, guitar); Joel Perdue (drums); Casey Yarbrough (guitar, bass); Luciano Giarrano (bass, guitar, vocals)
Windmills and flip kicks abound, the Charges 7″ is a packed punch to the brain. Charges charge into the album without remorse, immediately hitting you with the brazen Leave the Blade Bloody. A fast paced romper that is swelled with punk arrogance…the kind that makes you want to jump on the dance floor and knock someone over. Its a farfisa laden tune thats meant to both inspire and destroy. Face Time continues the pace and takes on the bittersweet and scarcity in life. Believe It is a chorus heavy 2 minutes, 35 seconds that I interpreted as a cry for reason, questioning unseeable truths. It starts out heavy with guitar and drums and takes a prophetic twist toward the middle as Mick Winters tells an adventurous story…a warning over apocalyptic keys until the chorus jumps back in…”I’ll believe it, when I see it with my own Eyes”…
The 7″ ends on another farfisa driven song called Will You be Mine. A track that borders on flattery and imperiousness, unforgiving in its coarseness, yet somewhat seductive.
The album is inviting and exciting. It entices many an emotion both mostly it just energizes. Don’t come out to a Charges show prepared to stand around with your arms folded, come to get gritty.
Joel is also in 40 Hells and Casey and Luciano are in Author’s Apology. ?
Charges play 529 this coming Saturday, February 5th with Five Eight, Star Fighter, Baby Baby
