From frontman Jacob Hunt on the song – ‘This is one of the first songs I wrote when I started the band, and some of the lyrics are pretty laughable. “Heartsicle”? That’s pretty embarrassing. But the stanza that begins with “pour your story out” is kind of badass. Mostly, the song is a sarcastic response to and literal take on someone’s assessment of me, though the last verses are meant to be conciliatory.
Apparently this was the most popular song in our early sets, and it was the first one we ever demo’d. It was changed a lot over the years and then dropped for a long time. But I finally resurrected it as the full-fledged dance song it was always supposed to be. I recorded this new version at home last summer
and played all the parts except the drums sampled from an Orange Juice song.’
Lyrics: little did you know this day would come
our unspoken promise: broken, done
i’m no one’s necessary shoulder, no
it figures that my frame would seem too slight
my tears’ll fail at your funeral
eyes dry: a way to say I’m alright
blood gets nowhere with this heartsicle frozen in place
oh no… no fair you cut but you cut in vain whatever you say
we can be a tricycle: hop on
could you keep your poise were my wheel gone?
oh no concern, i’m used to walking now
it’s better for my lungs and for my heart
i can’t afford to waste another word
on sentences that finish what they start
keep your distance close; no need to get near
if you do intrude the cost is clear
offer my reply: “what is it to me?”
you could never thaw cold-hearted me
ice flows so slowly and if only
there’s enough to make the mountains melt
under the ocean so much frozen
drifting silent just the peak to be seen
pour your story out ready to be served
i’ll provide the glasses and sugar
does it burn your tongue? i’ve got just the thing
for your comfort thank cold-hearted me
it’s not like another problem that i’m solvin’
no one else was as surprised as me
i’m thinking often we could soften
maybe give ourselves somewhere to fall upon
(my heartsicle is frozen… it’s vain to cut it open)
it’s a miracle my blood gets thru my veins
with this heartsicle frozen in place
check my pulse tho maybe i don’t want to know
you cut but you cut in vain whatever you say
