This show was a celebration of three groups representing a new wave of hip-hop/rock fusion, all three bands representing a different take on the melding of different genres. Being in Atlanta, it is easy to see how the blending of genre would be inevitable. Sound Detour went on first. They are a 5 piece, composed of Anell on vocals, Star on Bass guitar, Bryan on Guitar/keys, Jon on Drums and Joie backing up on vocals. This group had some punk influenced songs as well as some more mellow songs. They reminded me a little of No Doubt’s earlier days. Listen to them here on myspace.
Next up was Detroit Mutant Radio, from Detroit to California ending in Atlanta or so we hope. This group is fronted by Mr. Creech, who put the group together, a medley of rock and hip hop musicians. The band is Mr. Creech – Vocals, Whiz – Guitar, Dave O – Guitar, DJ B-Naut- Turntables, Carlos – Bass and J-Roc – Drums. The band is influenced by Run DMC, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, Michael Jackson and Mike Patton (Faith No More) among others. This is apparent in their music. I highly recommend this band to fans of older school hip/hop and also of newer alt-rock like the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Incubus. They have an album out now, find more about them at their myspace page.
Third and headlining was local act StereoTalk, who is currently blowing up. This band is like a mix of hip hop verses with pop-experimental rock choruses to get the crowds chanting. StereoTalk is made of Charles Ahanotu- Lyrics/MC, Ben Baldwin – Guitar/Vocals, Myke Patterson – Bass/Keyz and Eric Haugh – Drums/Vocals, who also does a lot of management for the band.
Although the two genres this band is playing are very polar in many ways, slowly the group is finding commonalities that are bringing them together in an organic and natural way that will be sure to break new musical ground. Check their myspace out here.
That’s it for now, check back soon for a more features and updates! And Happy New Year, we are looking forward to a year full of great Atlanta music and great times!! Peace out.
