I recently heard a really good interview with a rep (possibly the founder, I don’t recall) from CoolEarth.org. One of my main takeaways was a statement the rep made in which he said you could counter and even erase the effects of your ‘carbon footprint’ by donating just $100 a year to Cool Earth’s cause. He said forget everything else you’re doing, such as recycling, using less gas, eating less meat, etc., and just donate to help stop deforestation. Why that is? Because trees are one of the largest, if not the largest, counter effects to pumping carbon into the atmosphere. A single tree soaks up billions of units of carbon and keeps that carbon from being released into the atmosphere.
Their Mission: “Cool Earth is the charity that works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction.
Half of the world’s rainforest has been destroyed in the last 40 years. And, contrary to the headlines, rainforest continues to be lost at a faster rate than ever.”
Why Rainforests? “We depend upon the rainforest for everything.
The reality of climate change is no longer up for debate. It is real and it is happening now. Our changing climate is the most pressing challenge facing our world today.
Forest loss plays a major part in this, contributing to more than 21% of all CO2 emissions. Keeping rainforest standing is the simplest and cheapest way to mitigate climate change.
Despite this, we are destroying the world’s rainforest at a faster rate than ever.”
