Small Reactions will be having a show at 529 on November 19th, 2010. Its only $5 and the 7″ will be available for the first time and that will only be $5. You can see the facebook event page here. The show is 21+. Sorry No Ferrari, Sons of Thor and Tar Bay Beez will be sharing the stage as well. This show is not to miss.
The 7″ features the songs Cult Here Jonathan Lewin and Fat Zebra. Both songs are catchy lo-fi garage tunes reminiscent of a toned down Strokes and maybe some Pixies. Kinda post punk with a romantic twist. Its definitely worth picking up. The songs are pretty happy tunes and although summer is over, I believe they’re the perfect summer songs. Go to the show, its only $5 and you get Small Reactions and Sorry No Ferrari on the same stage…an eclectic night for sure.
We asked Small Reactions a few questions about the 7″ and the show coming up…
B: Why did you choose these two songs?
In the process of making the record, we realized that the songs bear much in common. First, they were both first takes, so they share the same kind of energy. They are also musically similar. We had recorded some other songs in hopes to put out an EP, but thought the other songs didn’t fit the post-punk kind of thing. Not all of our songs sound like these, so it was nice just pairing these two up like this. We knew they had to be on vinyl, and because we were doing everything ourselves, it was easy to experiment with a 7″ to make sure we got everything right. Finally, there is still something really cool about singles. As a format, it has existed for decades. And they always work best on vinyl.
B: Who produced the release? How long did you work on it?
Luciano Giarrano from Author’s Apology and The Charges did all the recording, mixing, mastering, and artwork. He also produced in a way. We recorded at our friend Jeffrey Bützer’s house last November and finished up everything in a couple days. Chad Shivers from Sorry No Ferrari also recorded a drone line which runs through “Fat Zebra” and some lead and effects on both songs.
B: Will you be playing any never heard songs at the release show?
Yes. We’ve actually been focusing most of our time on writing and playing new songs. We’ve got at least three new songs we are going to try out at the show which sound really different to anything else we’ve ever done. As soon as we get a song done we like to play it live and see where it goes. We try to keep a level of spontaneity by playing them before they’re finalized. The songs might be completely different the next show out, which hopefully keeps things interesting for everyone. “Cult Hero Jonathan Lewin” was played a lot last year and drastically evolved at every show.
B: Any closing thoughts or anything you want folks to know about the show or the 7″, maybe some news on the future of Small Reactions?
Yea! The cover to the record is actually a exposed polaroid with the ink pushed out by hand. So actually, it is a picture of nothing. Kind of like melted celluloid or something? We went for a Damned kind of thing when putting Small Reactions in big letters at the top. It took me forever to find that font for some reason… “Cult Hero Jonathan Lewin” is named after Scotty and Sam’s math professor from New Zealand. It was the oldest of the five tracks we recorded last year and “Fat Zebra” was the newest. Both songs are a little older, now I guess. Because we did the whole project ourselves, it took quite a while to put everything together. We’ll be much quicker next time, however.
We’ve got about seven ideas for new songs and we are going to try to record and release those and more around March or so. Oh, and we all live together in East Atlanta in a house called Rock Bottom with our cats, Walter and Toby. You may have been to one of our house parties. We hope to see everyone at the show on November 19th. Sorry No Ferrari, Sons of Thor, and the Tar Bay Beez open the show. It’s only $5! See you then.
B: Fucking cool guys. I’m looking forward to the show. Ya’ll and Sorry No Ferrari in one night is a show people shouldn’t miss. Great answers, the 7″ sounds great and we’ll see you guys at the show…
FOLKS…you gotta try to make it out to this one…
