Attention System will be rocking the Drunken Unicorn next Friday March 30th w/ Sonen and Death of Paris and we have an exclusive interview with South Carolina’s Death of Paris.
I got a bit of footage from Attention System a couple weeks ago and its pretty awesome. The sound isn’t great but I wanted to bring attention to their awesome stage lights, which play perfectly like another instrument with their music. Check it out…
Here is the interview with Death of Paris:
B: You mentioned you’ve come through Atlanta a few times before, have you played the Drunken Unicorn before?
This will be our first time playing at the Drunken Unicorn – we’ve heard great things about the place from our friends who have played there. The only other bar that we’ve been able to play in Atlanta so far has been Smith’s Old Bar, so we’re really looking forward to getting back down there.
B: How did you get hooked up with the show on the 30th?
We were introduced to Attention System through our mutual friends in Atlanta band Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun. We’ve been trying to get together for a show with Attention System forever and we’re glad it’s finally working out. We will also be playing with them the following night at our next stop in Greenville, SC.
B: You’re debut album was recorded in LA, what was that experience like?
Complete culture shock. The whole vibe is just so different and no one has that sense of “Southern hospitality,” it’s very weird. It’s almost as if people question your motive if you hold the door open for them. Only Blake and I went out to record the album, since we hadn’t even formed the band yet, and neither one of us had ever been to LA before. We were in the studio from sun up to sun down, and then some, recording and playing all the parts just the two of us. It was a very intense experience to say the least, but our producer was very demanding and we came out even more focused on what we went out there for. We’re very proud of the record and hope to spend some time touring the West coast later in the year.
B: After releasing your debut, you spent much of 2011 on tour, and it sounds like you’ve gained a ton of momentum…tell us a bit about that experience. Any crazy shit happen?
We’ve been incredibly lucky this past year. We had the amazing opportunity to headline a Myrtle Beach Rocks! Showcase at the Myrtle Beach House of Blues, and were then asked back to open for 100 Monkeys. That experience in itself was crazy because it came so soon to us after we had just gotten the right lineup a few months before and has really opened a lot of doors for us since then. We’ve really made it a point to be on the road as much as possible, whether it be our East Coast tour last summer or just playing regionally every single weekend. We’ve really just been focused on playing nonstop, trying to tighten our live show and really just get stronger as a band. As far as gaining momentum, we are striving to continue doing so.. the bigger opportunities that have come to us have really shown our strengths at being professional and hardworking and we’re really looking to prove that we deserve the chances we’ve been given and aren’t going to just throw them away.
B: How do you describe your music? Whats a Death on Paris show like?
It’s high-energy balls-to-the-wall electronic pop/rock. We’re sassy, emotional, smartass, and we play our hearts out every time we take the stage, We like to have a good time and we like to get the crowd involved at a show – we want people to have a good time and be able to take that memory home with them. They’re part of our history and we want to be part of theirs. Other than that – you’ll just have to come out and see for yourself.
B: It mentions on Facebook that you’re working on new material. Will we hear any on the 30th?
Absolutely! We’ve been hermits as of late – only going out to play shows really, otherwise we’ve been holed up working on new material that we actually just debuted for the first time this past weekend (March 10th). We’ve had such an amazing response so far to the new songs and we’re glad we’ve taken the time to really get them in the shape that we wanted them before playing them out. March 30th we’ll be playing all of our new songs: “Young Hearts,” about not giving up on what you wanted and who you thought you’d be when you were growing up, “New Blood,” an electronic anthem about survival and being underestimated, “72,” the first love song I’ve ever written! haha about being lovesick and caught up in a love/hate relationship and our Patti Smith “Because the Night” cover. We’re VERY excited to finally be bringing these songs to life on the stage and can’t wait to share them with Atlanta!
B: Any closing thoughts or anything you want folks to know about the show on the 30th?
It’s going to be epic and everyone needs to be there! My birthday is the start of our Northeast Tour March 28th and we will still be celebrating both so come out and show us how to party, Atlanta!
