So this review is from a while back when we first started the idea of reviewing beers…we just started doing it…dived right in. We now have a format we will introduce and follow for the beer reviews, but this one doesn’t follow it (although you may see this format again). I have a dozen other ‘early’ reviews that I will post as well. Anyway, on to the review…
So I had to look up ‘saison’ with this one (again, this review is from a while back). With all the beers I’ve tried over the years I’ve never seen the term. Wikipedia describes a saison as a “poorly defined pale ale” usually around 7% abv. Sneak Attack is 6.2% abv. It smells like earth with a very slight spiciness with subtle fruits. Fun and refreshing and a bit bold.
Sneak Attack looks like a light beer when poured into the glass. It had a ton of head though which is unusual for a ‘light’ beer from my experiences so far. The first taste was Wow! Assertive spiciness doesn’t do it justice. The cardamom hits you immediately and the swallow has a flowery, somewhat fruitiness after taste once the powerful cardamom begins to fade. The cardamom kick doesn’t wear off with each new swig, paying credence to its initial boldness.
Sneak Attack is sold as a winter beer but I tend like my winter beers a bit darker with more hops…thats just me though. If it were up to me, I’d sell this beer as an Autumn beer. Not Fall, Autumn, proper. The taste reminds me of the leaves changing colors and the new nip in the air. I recommend this beer in medium doses. A six pack will do you more than fine.
from the can….“Sneak Attack Saison (21st Amendment Brewery, San Francisco, CA): “A Saison brewed with Cardamom pods with an “Assertive” spiciness.”
