This was my first time seeing Detroit Mutant Radio and…wow. These guys are avid supporters of beatlanta and I’ve had the awesome chance to hang out with them quite a few times. Come to one of our house shows and you’ll most likely have the chance to meet them. Without even hearing their music these guys stood out to me. They have a drive that you don’t see too often amongst local bands. That drive is the determination to get their sound out there and make themselves the rockstars they know they’re going to be. You may think you know bands with that determination but Detroit Mutant Radio (DTM) take it to the next level. They’re out their meeting the folks that can make things happen and they deserve it on all levels. They have an album out called Cash N Burn that you can pick up at CD Baby.
DTM play what they have coined “rock fusion,” playing on, I’m sure, the more known “jazz fusion.” At first listen, some folks might pass them off as another rap-rock group, but they are so much more than that. Drawing on influences from jazz, rock, metal, soul, motown, r&b, rap and the like, DTM brings to the stage a compulsive and energetic live show. The band blends epic, funky guitar breakdowns with jazz charged rhythm and beats and create a powerful and larger than life sound. Creech on vocals sings and flows with consummate elegance, harnessing the raw power of his band and directing it outward with positive force and intellectual grace. He sings, raps, bellows and yells stories of social awareness and practical alternatives. If you talk to Creech about anything you can tell he is a passionate dude when it comes to social and political issues and above all, his music. He puts his all into his lyrics and into his live performance. At any given point, you might think you’re watching Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Brandon Boyd or your favorite rockstar. He seamlessly flows from style to style meshing them all to uniquely grind out his own. With the power and talent of the band behind him, I have no doubt that Mr. Creech and Detroit Mutant Radio have what it takes to be what they deserve to be…at the top.
Its not too often that one comes across a live show in which every song is more energetic than the next. There wasn’t a single song where someone might thinking about stepping outside to have a smoke; nor would they want to skip a note by heading to the bathroom. Gazing at the stage with awe, fans couldn’t look away, everyone’s eyes green and purple from the lights’ reflection. Creech with his Michael Jackson like dance moves and the band bobbing and rocking out to the grooves gushing from their instruments. The crowd was screaming and yelling and moving and the band didn’t stop. Upon finishing their set, the host asked if the crowd wanted another…yes. Then, another encore. I don’t recall the last song but the first encore was a fucking impressive cover of Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust...a splendid start to a perfect end of an amazing set by Detroit Mutant Radioby Detroit Mutant Radio.
