by Marina Yelensky…
So I saw this group for the first time last year at the Monthly Atlanta Jam Sessions at WonderRoot Community Art Center. For such a young group, the vibe just seems right with Honey Hips. Will, Tim and Oscar share great energy and you can feel it when they start the music! I was lucky enough to get an invite to “The Landfill” to spend some time getting to know these guys! A place for great music, shows and a place where artists and musicians can be free to grow together.
The Interview:
B: Honey Hips, fits the sound but, the name?
“Caitlynn, founding member, and I met in college. We played music for fun and a show came up, and even though we didn’t have anything prepared we said that we would do it. We tossed around a bunch of names such as Ghost Babe. We spent 3 days of playing with words and came up with Honey Hips.
B: Who are the members of Honey Hips?
Oscar Funes – rhythm and lead guitar. This full-bearded 28 year old Texas born guy with an El Salvadorian heritage has had a passion for the guitar since he was 16 but art struck his fancy at the age of 12. “I have always been in to the arts, drew a lot. It’s been a hell of a ride”.
Will Der – drums. So many musicians are nerdy and cool! The about to be 27, GA Tech graduate of civil engineering, vows to make music his full-time gig within the next year and I believe him! Will has done music seriously for about 1 year and performed in 60-70 shows in 2016. 2016 was a big year for him: 1 full album completed with the other band that he is a part of, Ego Aside; and 5 drum lines for hip hop songs. Will is also interning at Standard Electric Recording with owners Damen Moon, Chandler Galloway to learn the ins and outs of recording. Will reminisced a bit about drumline in high school being involved in music since he was a kid.
Tim Smith: Sing, rhythm guitar, whistle, harmonica ; from Cincinnati, OH. Age 29. Moved here on a whim; started playing music at 13 when Dad got mom a guitar for Christmas; went to college for illustration. BA from college helped to refine things. Playing is a different experience each time, cultivating a passion or a skill. Honey Hips is my baby. Played in bands in middle school but not seriously.
Unfortunately Caitlynn took a step back from the band. The band is looking for a female vocalist and trying someone out right now.
B: How did you meet?
“Caitlynn met PK, Parry. PK introduced us in a way. While here at the Landfill.” PK is part of the SAGAS that have played at the The Landfill. “The Landfill brought us all together.”
B: OK! What is the The Landfill, How did it get that name?
“Caitlynn and Tim were being trash pickers. We got 80 % of what we have at the landfill from give-a-ways or from the trash. The Landfill is our venue where we can live, play music and have our own events on our terms. The most acts we had in a night was 7 on Halloween 2016. Landfill is also where we had our first show! We really believe in a community based music environment and helping each other in growth.“
I had the pleasure of spending the evening with these soulful and genuine guys! The Landfill is such a favor-filled place of décor and inspiration! Honey Hips has a Blues, Folk Americana, “Raise Your Arm Hairs” kind of sound. My personal favorite is their song “Don’t Fuck with Me” (hear it below). A playful song with a serious sexy feel. When asked, the band mentioned, “My Baby’s Gone” as their planned single. There is no set date for Honey Hips’ first album release but the band estimates between 3 to 6 months and the title is still in the works.
