We were recently invited to check out Montreal band Thus Owls at the Masquerade and what an awesome show it was. Going into the show I knew very little about the band. I had only heard of them about a week before the show when I was emailed by their promoter and given a copy of their latest album and shown a couple very cool videos. Thus Owls’ songs are dreamy and melancholy, but triumphant at the same time. It’s psychedelically gorgeous music making where you can close your eyes, listen, take it in, and see a journey laid out in front of you. Erika Angell on vocals is nothing short of stunning as her range and vocal tones are an instrument among themselves. The band released the album “Turning Rocks” this past April and hit the road in support of the album. I highly recommend their album and seeing them on tour next time they come around. You can see a live video from the show below. Thus Owls on FaCEboOk (give them a like).
I did get the chance to ask the band a few questions on camera. Please keep in mind this was last minute; I wasn’t prepared and the band wasn’t either. We didn’t have a quiet space so we did it out front of the Masquerade on a small hand held camera. There are a couple parts that are a bit hard to hear but overall the band is awesome, what they have to say is awesome and you should turn it up and take a listen. But first watch one of their latest music videos – I ask them for the story behind this video at the end of the interview…
Band Bio: Thus Owls is a Montréal based band with two releases behind them. They are a transatlantic band comprised of husband and wife duo Erika and Simon Angell. By their side they have Parker Shper, Martin Höper and Stefan Schneider.
The album is both a scrapbook of memories and oral transmissions from an island in Sweden, and a sonic experiment in tone and colour recorded in Montreal.
