Youngbombs is a Vancouver based duo that does not speak to one distinct genre. They have not released any originals at this point, It seems that original music is in the works but no ETA for release. It’s easy to put artists into genre when original music is involved. That is not the case here… But Youngbombs stand behind the idea of ‘forever you’ which I support. Martin and Tristan are the two friendly individuals that make up Youngbombs and it’s always interesting to learn how a group comes to be; the history is almost as good as the result. I had the opportunity to sit down with these kind and spunky guys for an interview at Shaky Beats 2017.
B: Your set was awesome!! I loved the variety. There is very little info on your guys out there…can you give us a little bio?
Martin. – Martin, born of Sonya and Lenord in Vancouver, British Columbia. Our bands played a show together. Tristan’s band was falling apart and Martin wasn’t happy with his band either.
These guys met about 15 years ago.
Tristan- Martin lit his drum symbols on fire and this got Tristan’s attention. We had never written a note together and we already had the chemistry. Why don’t we just do it? We formed another band, “The Sessions”. We won the world’s largest battle of the Bands.
Martin – We were 19 and 20 at the time. That was the “we can take on anything” moment. We went home after this success and our band broke up.
B: What projects are you working on?
We’re planning for a Summer time release. Singles, not an album. We are finally making music that we are passionate about. Disruptive Records/ Disruptive management/ Sony. We have not decided if we are going to do an EP or singles. Nothing is set in stone.
B: Do you want to be under a label? Do you get to keep your masters?
It’s possible. We love our whole team. It feels like a family and not a job. It’s like if you want to do it, do it, if not then don’t. Metallica had the coolest deal where they got their masters back after 20 years.
B: Who inspires you now and then? What keeps you motivated?
Tristan: Oasis, Greenday, Gold finger.
Martin: My father. He passed away in March. He was the biggest inspiration in my life. He was a drummer. I’m a drummer. That got my foot in the door. Music was always playing in the house. If I could be half as cool as my dad!
B: You are here right now (At Shaky Beats Festival 2017)! How does it feel?
It’s amazing! Amazing is an understatement. This is a job?! You play music with people. You pour your heart in the studio. What am I doing here right now? There were so many people. We went ballistic. We definitely had a moment.
B: What other shows a have you done recently?
This winter we did Adventure Club. New city, new place, every day was like “hello we’re on tour.”
B: How does an EDM festival like Shaky Beats compare to other shows?
Everything that we dropped today, it connected. We are not trying to say the EDM crowd is an easy crowd but they come to have a good time. They are not there to try to impress their girlfriend with a bottle. This is the opposite of the indie crowd. EDM crowds go there to have fun. Who do you want to go to your show? Someone who is there to enjoy it and share that fun with everyone or someone who is coming to judge you? EDM crowds are great!
B: So I watched your entire set. And I had people around me that were like “wow” we just went from this to this to this. You showed a lot of versatility.
We just play what we like. We bore easily. We didn’t really have a set planned. We just thought should we play this? Yeah. We like to think that music has a thing that unites all of the genres.
B: What instruments do you play?
Martin: I play Drums, Guitar, Piano, Triangle, Maracas and I sing a bit.
Tristan: I play guitar. You know how Martin won his girlfriend over? He stood outside her window and played the kazoo.
B: You have the same management team as Chainsmokers. Do you get to work with them a bit?
They are our friends but you never know with music. We have known Drew (from the Chainsmokers) about 15 years. He’s from North Van (Vancover) too. We don’t know if we are going to do any music with them but we are going to play with them in Calgary, Canada.
B: What shows do you have coming up?
Firefly Festival in Delaware.
Lala Palooza
Adventure Club – a bunch of shows.
Shows in Puerto Rico, Orlando and Tampa
