I spent yesterday afternoon with this EP and after a few listens it has grown on me. It has a 90s alternative feel to me and the lyrical insights are introspective and sincere. Tracks 2 and 4 stand out to me. Track 2, “Objective Look at a Family Album,” starts out reminding me of a Beck track, easy going but agitated, before breaking down into a heavy instrumentals with a foreboding feel – “…Its not a metaphor.” Track 4, “Prior Conviction,” rings more like in the pop punk song in the realm of Frank Turner, Against Me or The Gaslight Anthem. All in all its a solid EP. With just 4 tracks, it features a wide range of genre offerings.
A Statement from the band on the EP: “First there was the way and the way was a Tascam DR-100. Most of these sounds were captured with that little black rectangle and some microphone or other. Nick and Gus recorded themselves expertly hitting things and then most of the rest was up to the owner and proprietor of meaning of everything. We wanted quite a lot of voices on one song so Sirkka lent us her coffee shop and a couple dozen people showed up to sing and that was a lot of fun. Loud noises were made in the middle of the night and generally when we were supposed to be doing other things. This album was mixed using computers and ears. Thanks to Hilary for being on the cover. And thanks to Brother Hawk and Pony League for lending us their musicians. And hey, thanks for listening. Turn it all the way up while you’re at it. Released May 19, 2017”
