The craft beer industry is exploding in the United States. Every year, craft beer sales in the U.S. continue to gain market share and while that share is still small, its getting ever more significant; but just as that share is rising, the craft beer market in the U.S. might have another challenger (other than the major beers that take up their certainly undeserved piece of the pie). That challenger comes from our next door neighbor Mexico. I don’t say this out of fear or alarm for our favorite American craft brewers (but do get ready) but out of excitement. The idea that Mexico has a booming craft beer market has my taste buds salivating uncontrollably. Not only does that open beer lovers to a new set of flavors from Mexico, it opens up craft breweries in our country to a new set of flavors and opportunity for collaboration…and that is exciting.
A recent article I came across on yahoo states:
“I think the market is still very much in its infancy,” said John Holl, editor of All About Beer Magazine. “It’s similar to where the United States might have been 25 years ago.” …”We’re seeing stouts, Belgian-style ales, tripels, beers that have local ingredients in with the mash,” Holl explained. “I think local ingredients can really be everything. Beers are brewed with cactus. Beers are aged in tequila barrels, or with spices that might go into certain local dishes.”
That sounds fucking amazing. I’ve tried a handful of beers from Mexico but nothing I would classify as ‘craft’…only the main imports. I’ll certainly be on the lookout and can’t wait to try some local Mexican ingredients. Brewery tour south of the border anyone? I think so…read more from the article here.
