Back in January I came across an article by Karen Han of the Daily Beast titled “The Shocking Case of the All-American Jock and the Dead Punk Rocker“ in which she reviews and compares the movie “Bomb City” and the movie’s story (bases on true events) to some of today’s news and events. I found the article insightful and interesting. While the trailer does portray as a little over dramatic in my opinion, the movie does look good and I look forward to seeing it. Its also based on a true story which adds another layer of interest.
The film was a limited release in theaters in a few months and released on demand at the same time. It is available to rent on Amazon Prime for $3.99 and probably other places as well. I have not seen it but will watch it soon. Maybe I’ll update this post, maybe not :)-
about the film from IMBD: “A crime-drama, about the cultural aversion of a group of punk rockers in a conservative Texas town. Their ongoing battle with a rival, more-affluent clique leads to a controversial hate crime that questions the morality of American justice.”
from youtube: “Winter 1997. Amarillo, Texas. Brian Deneke is known for his green mohawk and undying passion for punk music. He throws punk shows with his friends at a rundown venue known as “Bomb City.” Brian, along with many of his fellow punks, refuses to conform to the conservative culture that surrounds them. Their radical appearances stir social intolerance within the community, particularly with Cody Cates, a high school jock who assimilates to a pack known as “white-hatters.” After losing a football game, Cody and a few other white-hatters have an altercation with several of the punks. This conflict ignites a series of hostile encounters between the two groups, climaxing one evening with a horrific, violent street fight. The night would soon become notorious for being one of the most controversial hate crimes in modern American culture. Based on a true story.”
From the Daily Beast article linked above: “The film ends with Marilyn Manson’s post-Columbine speech, in which the shock rocker notes that Deneke was killed once by Camp, and then killed again by the trial, which essentially argued that he deserved to die because of the way he looked. In the face of that assessment, Bomb City seems to want to grant Deneke a second life.”
