I learned about this charity a couple months back when I saw an article talking JK Rowling (Harry Potter Author) and the good that she is doing with that Billion dollars she made from the Harry Potter series and other books. She really is an amazing lady; constantly sticking up for gay rights, against hate speech and she started LUMOS. She grew up very poor and now understands she is in a position to give back. You can read an interview with her about it here.
Here is the PROBLEM LUMOS states there is: “Across the globe 8 million children are living in institutions that deny them individual love and care. More than 80% are not orphans. They are separated from their families because they are poor, disabled or from an ethnic minority. As a result, many suffer lifelong physical and emotional harm. This is a violation of their human rights and the effects last a lifetime. One study found that young adults raised in institutions are 10 times more likely to be involved in prostitution than their peers, 40 times more likely to have a criminal record and 500 times more likely to take their own lives.”
Here is the SOLUTION LUMOS offers: “Children should not grow up in institutions, with their depersonalized spaces and complete isolation from society. Lumos works on every level, with every actor, to transform an outdated and harmful system into one which supports and protects children and enables them to have a positive future. Together with our partners we replace institutions with community based services that provide children with access to health, education and social care tailored to their individual needs. This supports families to provide the loving care their children need to develop to their full potential and build a positive future for themselves.”
